Days Between Dates
Count how many days separate two dates, with the choice of including or leaving out the end date. The result is also split into weekdays and weekend days, which is the quick way to estimate working days.
Today by default.
Result
Enter both dates to count the days between them.
The calculation runs in this browser tab. Nothing you enter is uploaded, saved or logged.
What does “days between two dates” mean?
The number of days between two dates depends on one convention: whether the last day is counted. The days from Monday 1 January to Monday 8 January are 7 if you count the gaps between the days (from the start up to, but not including, the end) and 8 if you count every date in the range, both ends included. Neither is wrong, and the right one depends on the question.
Use “up to the end date” for elapsed time, such as how many days since or until an event, a deadline, a pregnancy or a loan term. Use “both dates included” for inclusive spans, such as a holiday from the 1st to the 7th (7 days of holiday) or the length of a hotel stay counted in days of presence.
How to use the Days Between Dates
- Enter the two dates. The second date is today by default.
- Choose whether the end date is counted. Leave it as “not counted” for elapsed time, or choose “both dates included” for an inclusive range.
- Read the number of days, then the split into weekdays and weekend days, the weeks and days, and the hours.
- Use Copy result to copy the number of days, or Reset to start again.
Formula
- Days between
- days = day number(end) − day number(start)
- Both dates included
- days = day number(end) − day number(start) + 1
- Weekends
- weekend days = days − weekdays
- Weeks
- weeks = ⌊days ÷ 7⌋, with days mod 7 left over
Weekdays are the days from Monday to Friday. The calculator counts them exactly by adding 5 days for every full week and checking the days left over one by one.
In a spreadsheet, subtracting two dates gives the days between them without the end date, while NETWORKDAYS counts working days with both ends included.
Worked example
The first quarter of 2024, counted with both the first and the last day included. These are the results the calculator gives:
| Question | Result |
|---|---|
| Input: From | 2024-01-01 |
| Input: To | 2024-03-31 |
| Input: End date | Counted: include both the start and the end date |
| Days, both dates included | 91 days |
| From | Monday, 1 January 2024 |
| To | Sunday, 31 March 2024 |
| Weekdays (Monday to Friday) | 65 |
| Weekend days | 26 |
| Weeks and days | 13 weeks and 0 days |
| Hours | 2,184 |
Assumptions and limits
- Public holidays are not removed from the count of weekdays, because they depend on the country, the region and the year. Subtract them yourself to get the working days.
- Only dates are used; the time of day and time zones are ignored. A day is always counted as 24 hours.
- If the first date is after the second, the dates are swapped automatically and the page says so.
- Dates use the Gregorian calendar from year 1 to year 9999, with leap days included.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are there between two dates?
Subtract the earlier date from the later one, counting real calendar days. From 1 January to 31 January it is 30 days without the end date, or 31 days with both dates included.
Should I include the end date?
Include it when you count the days themselves, for example “a conference from the 10th to the 12th lasts 3 days”. Leave it out when you measure elapsed time, such as “12 days have passed since the 1st”.
How do I count working days between two dates?
Use the weekdays figure, which counts Monday to Friday, then subtract any public holidays that fall on a weekday in the period. Holidays are not included automatically because they differ between countries.
How many days are in a year?
365 in a common year and 366 in a leap year, which has 29 February. A year is a leap year when it is divisible by 4, except for years divisible by 100 that are not divisible by 400: 2000 and 2024 are leap years, 1900 and 2100 are not.
How do I find the number of days until a future date?
Leave the second date as today and enter the future date first (the order does not matter). For a live countdown with hours, minutes and seconds, use the countdown calculator.
Why is the number of hours always a multiple of 24?
Because only dates are entered, every day is counted as 24 hours. To measure between specific times of day, use the time duration calculator.
