Tip Calculator

Enter the bill and the tip percentage to get the tip and the total. You can round the total to a whole amount, and split it between several people, with the cents shared out so the shares add up to the total exactly.

Inputs

In any currency, before the tip.

10% to 20% is common in many places.

To split the total.

Result

Enter the bill and a tip percentage.

The calculation runs in this browser tab. Nothing you enter is uploaded, saved or logged.

How is a tip calculated?

A tip is a percentage of the bill added as thanks for service. The tip is the bill multiplied by the rate, and the total is the bill plus the tip: an 18% tip on 84.50 is 84.50 × 0.18 = 15.21, for a total of 99.71.

Customs vary widely. In the United States, 15% to 20% is customary in restaurants, while in many other countries service is already included in the bill and a tip is a small extra or a round-up. Check the bill for a service charge before adding a tip, so that you do not pay for service twice.

How to use the Tip Calculator

  1. Enter the amount on the bill, in any currency.
  2. Enter the tip percentage you want to leave.
  3. To split the total, enter the number of people. Optionally choose to round the total to a whole amount.
  4. Read the tip and the total at the top, and what each person pays below. Use Copy result to copy the total.

Formula

Tip
tip = bill × (tip percentage ÷ 100)
Total
total = bill + tip
Per person
share = total ÷ number of people, with the cents shared out so the shares add up to the total
Tip after rounding
effective tip % = (rounded total − bill) ÷ bill × 100

When the total is rounded, the tip changes with it, and the page shows the percentage you are actually leaving.

When a total cannot be divided evenly in cents, some people pay one cent more. The calculator gives the extra cents out one at a time so that the shares add up to the total exactly: 99.71 between 4 people is 24.93 three times and 24.92 once.

Worked example

A dinner bill of 84.50, an 18% tip, shared between 4 people. These are the results the calculator gives:

Each of 4 people pays24.93 (3 people), 24.92 (1 person)

Assumptions and limits

  • The calculator does not know local customs or whether a service charge is already included. Check your bill.
  • The tip is worked out on the bill amount you enter. If your bill includes tax and you want the tip on the pre-tax amount only, enter the pre-tax amount.
  • Amounts are shown with two decimals. For currencies with no minor unit, such as the Japanese yen, use the rounding option to get a whole amount.
  • Rounding down never takes the tip below zero; if it would, the tip is set to 0 and the page says so.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 15% tip?

Multiply the bill by 0.15. For a bill of 60, the tip is 9 and the total is 69. As a shortcut, find 10% by moving the decimal point (6) and add half of it (3).

How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Multiply the bill by 0.20, or double 10% of the bill. A bill of 85 gives a 17 tip, for a total of 102.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Practice varies. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, others on the total. The calculator uses the amount you enter, so enter whichever you prefer.

How do I split a bill and a tip fairly between several people?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. When the total does not divide evenly, the calculator shows which people pay one cent more, so no cent is lost. For unequal orders, use the split bill calculator.

Why round the total?

Rounding up to a whole amount makes the payment easier, especially in cash. The calculator shows the tip percentage you actually leave after rounding.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

A service charge is a fee added by the restaurant, often a fixed percentage. A tip is optional and goes to staff. If the bill already has a service charge, you may not need to tip as well.
