Discount Calculator

Work out the sale price and how much you save when something is a percentage off. You can add a second discount on top (which is not the same as adding the two percentages), or do it the other way round and find the discount from the original and the sale price.

Inputs

Taken off the already discounted price.

Result

Enter the original price and the discount.

The calculation runs in this browser tab. Nothing you enter is uploaded, saved or logged.

How is a discount calculated?

A discount of 25% takes a quarter off the price: the sale price is the original price times (1 − 0.25), so 80 becomes 60 and you save 20. The saving is the original price times the discount, and the sale price is what is left.

Two discounts in a row do not add up. Taking 25% off and then a further 10% off the reduced price leaves 0.75 × 0.90 = 0.675 of the original price, a total discount of 32.5%, not 35%. This is because the second percentage applies to a smaller number. Working backwards, the discount from an original price and a sale price is the saving divided by the original price.

How to use the Discount Calculator

  1. Choose whether you know the discount (and want the sale price) or know both prices (and want the discount).
  2. Enter the original price and the discount, or the sale price. Optionally, enter an extra discount that is taken off the reduced price.
  3. Read the sale price and the amount you save. With an extra discount, the page also shows the total discount.
  4. Use Copy result to copy the answer, or Reset to start again.

Formula

Sale price
sale = original × (1 − discount ÷ 100)
Saving
saving = original − sale
Two discounts
sale = original × (1 − d₁ ÷ 100) × (1 − d₂ ÷ 100)
Discount from two prices
discount % = (original − sale) ÷ original × 100

The total discount from two stacked discounts is 1 − (1 − d₁)(1 − d₂): always a little less than d₁ + d₂.

The sale price is rounded to the cent. If a percentage that is worked out does not end, it is shown rounded and marked ≈.

Worked example

An item at 80 with 25% off and a further 10% off the reduced price. These are the results the calculator gives:

Assumptions and limits

  • Sales tax or VAT is not included. Enter the price with or without it, consistently, or use the VAT calculator.
  • The calculator uses the original price you enter; it cannot tell if that “original” price is a real previous price.
  • In the reverse mode the sale price cannot be higher than the original price, because that would not be a discount.
  • Amounts are shown to two decimals.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage discount?

Multiply the price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to get the saving, and subtract it. 25% off 80: 80 × 0.25 = 20, so the sale price is 60. In one step, multiply by 0.75.

How do I find the discount percentage from two prices?

Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. From 80 to 60 is (80 − 60) ÷ 80 = 25%.

What is 25% off then 10% off?

32.5% off in total, not 35%. The second discount applies to the reduced price: 80 → 60 → 54. You pay 67.5% of the original price.

Is a 50% discount followed by 50% the same as free?

No. 50% off twice leaves 25% of the price, a 75% total discount. Two discounts never reach 100% unless one of them is 100%.

How do I calculate the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by 1 minus the discount. If an item costs 60 after 25% off, the original price was 60 ÷ 0.75 = 80. The percentage calculator also does this.

Does the discount apply before or after tax?

It depends on the shop and the country. In most places the discount reduces the price and tax is then charged on the lower amount, but check the receipt.
